Short answer: Changing your personal name does not automatically rename your limited company or trading business. Create evidence of your new personal name, update the relevant public and tax records, then tell your bank, clients and suppliers. A deed poll is one way to show the change; marriage and civil partnership certificates may also be accepted where relevant.
If you are a company director
Tell Companies House when a director’s personal details change. Its guidance says to report a director’s personal details within 14 days. You can update an individual director’s name using the online service or form CH01. Check whether you also need to update your person with significant control (PSC) details. Keep your identity evidence available in case the company bank or another organisation asks for it.
Your personal name and your company’s registered name are separate. If you also want to rename the company, follow the Companies House company-name process. The company’s new name takes effect when Companies House registers it; a personal deed poll does not rename the company.
If you are a sole trader
Tell HMRC about your personal name change, and update your business details for the taxes and schemes you use. That can include Self Assessment, VAT, PAYE or the Construction Industry Scheme. HMRC says VAT changes must be reported within 30 days. A sole trader does not file a CH01 director update simply because their personal name changed.
Then check your business bank account, payment processor, insurance, invoices, contracts, website, domain registration and professional licences. Ask each provider what proof it accepts. If you use a trading name, decide whether that name also needs changing; your new personal name and your trading name need not be identical.
Choose how to prepare a deed poll
For an adult in England or Wales, GOV.UK offers free wording for an unenrolled deed poll. Complete it carefully, print it and sign in both names with two adult witnesses. This is a valid route when properly executed; a paid service is a convenience choice, not a legal requirement. Check whether the organisation receiving it wants an enrolled deed poll or additional proof.

Keep a copy of your deed poll or other name-change evidence alongside the confirmations from Companies House and HMRC. Update records in a sensible order so your bank, tax details and business documents can be reconciled.
